This course will help you develop advanced expertise in creating costumes and accessories for the theater, film, and procosplay industries. These creative fields demand both imaginative vision and practical execution skills.
In recent years, integrating technology into costume design has become increasingly essential—not only in terms of materials and construction but also for the phygital effects required on stage and screen. Beyond deepening your understanding of classic costume design, this course offers a unique focus on Cosplay, an art form that originated in Japan in the mid-1980s and has since grown into a global phenomenon.
Once considered an eccentric niche for anime enthusiasts, Cosplay has evolved into an international business, bringing together global communities at major events such as Tokyo’s Comiket, San Diego Comic-Con, and Lucca Comics & Games.
This course equips you with the skills to enter this rapidly expanding sector professionally, preparing you to design and craft high-quality, cinematic-level costumes for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Whether creating custom outfits, armor, accessories, weapons, or props, you’ll master the art of helping enthusiasts achieve perfect character embodiment, bringing their Modern Mythology heroes to life.

Pattern Making
Lecturer: Claudine Vincent
The Pattern Making module aims to enhance your expertise as a technical pattern maker, focusing on the essential skill of creating patterns for costumes based on your own creative ideas or those of a costume designer. This module combines both theoretical and hands-on practical learning in the workshop. You will gain the ability to design complex patterns, master advanced tailoring techniques, and learn how to make adjustments and corrections.
Tailoring
Lecturer: Laura Diana
This module is designed to enhance your skills in assembling the various components of a costume. You will learn to master marking, cutting, sewing, and working with fabrics, while becoming proficient with advanced tools and equipment used in production. The aim of the course is to provide you with the practical skills required to work as a garment technician in both craft workshops and industrial settings, while also offering you the specific knowledge needed to better understand the structure of different creations.
The module consists of both theoretical and hands-on practical sessions in the workshop. During these, you will learn how to manage the garment assembly process, including different production methods (tailoring, preparatory and intermediate pressing, stitching types, and sewing techniques), as well as how to handle microdesign, particularly for challenging fabrics. You will also gain experience in fitting, including corrections and adjustments, fitting trials, evaluating seam quality, and conducting quality checks on specific parts of the garment.
Prop Making & Prosthetic
Lecturer: Christian Colombhttps://www.fondazionemcube.it/en/i-nostri-docenti/#colomboo
A theater or film costume, and even more so a cosplayer’s costume, is not just an outfit to wear, but an artistic expression that, through modern technologies, has transformed complex accessories—such as helmets, armor, weapons, wings, elaborate footwear, and even cosmetic prosthetics—into three-dimensional wearable creations.
The Prop Making module, which balances both theory and practical experience, is designed to teach you how to create accessories for costumes, blending classic molding techniques with 3D printing and extending to the study of stage props.
Among the various disciplines covered, this course will allow you to refine your 3D printing skills in all its forms, learn how to use specialized software for preparing 3D printer files, and understand the techniques for creating molds for prosthetics and props.
A key part of this profession is an in-depth understanding of materials, as the craft involves extensive use of resins, silicones, polyurethanes, and various types of moldable foams. You will enhance your hand skills through the application of classical sculpting techniques while incorporating digital processes, allowing for a continuous alternation between physical workshops and digital production.
Throughout the course, your final projects will progress from the molding phase to final production, including techniques for finishing and decorating the props.
Technological Applications & e-Textile
Lecturer: Alessandro Marcon
The e-Textiles module offers a comprehensive introduction to the integration of electronics and innovative fabrics. Starting with the basic understanding of electricity, materials, and the necessary tools, the course progresses to exploring various types of switches, sensors, and fundamental connections.
In this course, you will refine your skills in programming components such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi, creating circuits that can be integrated into clothing. A particular focus will be placed on manipulating resistance in new materials to create custom sensors that respond to different needs. Additionally, the course will cover connection techniques between rigid and flexible materials, which are essential for the design of such projects.
This module is designed as a long-term resource, guiding you through practical, hands-on learning activities. You will have the opportunity to develop personal projects, integrating Arduino components, and creating interactive and unique designs that can be used in a variety of contexts. The hands-on experience will enhance both your professional skills and creativity in the field of e-textiles.
Embroidery
Lecturer: Luisa Pelosio
Embroidery represents the highest form of craftsmanship applied to haute couture and costume design. An ancient artistic expression that evolves over time to adapt to new styles and technologies, while remaining true to its identity as a form of decorative art applied to fabric.
With the large-scale production of fashion embroidery moving overseas (mainly to Asia), very few skilled artisans remain in Italy and France who are capable of applying traditional embroidery techniques to haute couture and costume design. These artisans are highly sought after by major brands not only for their ability to draw from ancient techniques but also for their incorporation of digital innovations into new experiments.
This module will allow you to enhance your expertise in this field, master the classic techniques, and develop the sensitivity and cultural understanding necessary to bring the future of high-quality fashion embroidery into the present.
Materials
Lecturers: Claudine Vincent / Fabrizio Modina
The theoretical/practical module examines the materials and components used in the construction of garments and costumes. Touch and sight are the senses that guide the choice of fabrics and accessories, while the material composition of the garment represents the structural architecture that determines its image and appearance.
Therefore, this course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of fabrics, which is essential for anyone working in the fashion and costume industry. The analysis includes the full range of available materials, from traditional fabrics to the latest technological innovations, covering animal, vegetal, artificial, and synthetic fibers, as well as technical and innovative fabrics.
Zbrush
Lecturer: Alessandro Depaoli
The Zbrush software has revolutionized the field of digital sculpting, providing designers with essential tools for 3D modeling. This program offers complete versatility to the artist, simulating the feel of highly detailed manual craftsmanship. Widely used in the world of video games, Zbrush is also highly valued in the film industry for its ability to create and process complex figures.
This module will guide you through using Zbrush to create intricate graphic elements, helping you master this powerful tool for digital sculpture and expand your creative possibilities.
History of Modern Mythology
Lecturer: Fabrizio Modina
Like all forms of art and contemporary languages—often difficult to identify and comprehend by those living in the same era—Modern Mythology remains today an area that is rarely codified from a cultural perspective, lacking structured research and an evolved critical apparatus. This course focuses on the identity immersion that six generations have attributed to the heroes and fantastical worlds generated by animation, comics, video games, television, and literature. It aims to stimulate your curiosity as a professional, encouraging knowledge beyond your current understanding, and sharpening your vision to direct your attention in new ways to assets with high anthropological, narrative, and value-driven potential.
You will be guided in reconnecting with ancient culture, distant cultures in space and time, complex cultures, and innovative ones, helping you identify and start formalizing your new professional profile, which crosses multiple fields of knowledge, while recognizing the significant authors of our present.
Alongside the heroes of history and fantasy, the contemporary era is also generating myths: real figures of our time—from music, fashion, sports, and cinema—who have already become icons of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The module seeks to fill a cultural gap, offering you, through a narrative aligned with your professional language, an impetus for research and a deeper understanding of contemporary themes that, on the surface, may seem different but are in fact closely interconnected.
